There is much talk about apprenticeships leading to degrees


 

The current discussions at both State and Federal level concerning new, modern apprenticeships are providing some interesting deliberations in vocational education. Gavin Moodie’s article “What Australia Can Learn from England’s Plan for Vocational Education” in “The Conversation” provided me with some useful background as to some factors that may be driving the current discussions.  I have noticed that Australia has a keen interest in the UK models.

I found the stark statement that “The UK government’s panel rejected the competency-based training of Australian vocational education qualifications” particularly interesting as, in my humble opinion, many policy makers have some difficulty understanding the full breadth of competency-based training.

Equally interesting was the finding of the panel that “public funds should not be allocated to for-profit providers”.

Are we about to see a significant shake up of vocational education in Australia?  Let us hope that policy makers will ensure that the current research produced on these matters will be taken into serious consideration before major decisions are made.  A discussion on this Hub would be worthwhile.

  1. It was very interesting to read the future direction of Vocational Education in the UK and specifically their rejection of Competency based training. I consider that the main issue is having an agreed measure of skills that all RTOs must adhere to and that are endorsed by industry and professional bodies. CBT is really hindered by the layers of compliance we must apply that detract from our core business as educators.
